Machine Learning for Advanced Coastal Storm Surge Prediction

Funding institution: Meteorological Service of New Zealand (MetService)

Period: 2021-2022

Description: In this project funded by the MBIE Ministry of New Zealand, (2019 ENDEAVOUR Call), MetOcean from MetService, in collaboration with University of Waikato and the GeoOcean group, is developing different algorithms based on machineā€learning to short-term forecast (24 to 72 hours) storm surge levels throughout the New Zealand coast. It is expected to develop a tailor-made neural network to model the relationship between input variables (sea level, pressure fields) obtained from a local weather model, and storm surge outputs from a freely available, coarse global hydrodynamic model and surge levels at a number of New Zealand tidal gauges.
